BEARS SHARE BALL, TOP HURON

Margaretta shares ball, tops Huron By JOSHUA MORGRET joshuamorgret@sanduskyregister.com Dec 19, 2025 10:15 PM CASTALIA — The strategy was to get the ball inside. Margaretta's execution was nearly flawless. The Polar Bears made 87 percent of the 2-pointers they attempted Friday, cruising past Huron 78-54 in Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division play. Margaretta (6-0, 2-0 SBC Bay) finished 32 of 37 from inside the arc. The Polar Bears made 8 of 9 in the first quarter, 12 of 13 in the second quarter and 10 of 11 in the third quarter. "Our goal was to really attack their zone," Margaretta coach Steve Keller said. "We knew they'd be playing a zone. They play that tandem 2-3 and 1-3-1 (zone defenses) and we worked against it all week. I just felt like our guys really shared the ball well. We really made a good look a great look by an extra pass." "Sharing is caring" was a theme for the Polar Bears. More often than not, Margaretta did make the extra pass for an easy layup. Julian Washington, a Division I Dayton commit, finished with 11 assists for the Polar Bears. "I told Julian when he came off after the third quarter that I know he's scored a lot of points in different games over his career, but I thought it was literally the best game he's played," said Keller of the senior. "He has the ability to make others better. It was extremely high level. It was really fun to watch." Washington's dimes to Tyson Bailey in the first quarter was key. The two connected twice before Keiygan Morris drilled a 3 for an 11-2 lead. Huron (1-5, 0-2) got back in the game a little bit, drawing with 13-8 on a triple from Grant Periat, but Margaretta responded. Bailey hit two free throws and added a bucket to make it 17-8. Later, he scored on an assist from Washington before Washington hit Judah Keller for a score. A 3 from Washington at the buzzer gave the Polar Bears a 24-10 lead after eight minutes. Bailey had 10 points in the first quarter and 14 for the game. "Tyson moves very well without the basketball and I thought you saw that on display tonight," Keller said. "We were able to hit the high post and he just slid into view. He's very active. He has a very high motor and he's so important to us "He really got us started well with getting open and available on the baseline." The onslaught from Margaretta didn't stop in the second quarter. The Tigers got within 26-16 on a three-point play from Parker Schafer, but never within single digits. Instead, Morris scored twice before Keller made it 32-16. Buckets from Bailey and Keller wrapped up the lightning quick 12-0 run. The Polar Bears were able to take care of the ball, despite playing fast. Margaretta had just one turnover in the first half, finishing with six for the game. "That's been a point of emphasis and will continue to be a point of emphasis," Keller said. "We just have to keep getting better. We had some sickness, but I was pleased with how we handled that adversity. We came out and got after it in a rivalry game." After leading 48-21 at the break, Morris drilled a triple and Keller scored — both off assists from Washington — to make it 53-29. Later, consecutive baskets from Keller pushed the lead to 63-31. Then, Washington picked a steal and threw down a thunderous dunk. Jake Bouy scored shortly after to send the game into running clock mode. "Our key was we wanted tempo," Keller said. "We had at least six points where the ball barely touched the floor. We got it up the floor and the guys were able to run to the rim. It was exciting to see that application from doing it in practice." Quentin Conway led Huron with 17 points while Schafer added 15 points. Keller topped Margaretta with 16 points. Tyson Bailey and Morris each registered 14 points, Washington scored 11 points to go with his 11 assists and Kale Bailey and Bouy each chipped in eight points. The Polar Bears are right back in action Saturday when they host Clyde (2-2). "We have a great rivalry with Clyde," Keller said. "They do a nice job and coach (Jared) Shetzer gets them ready to go. High scoring team with offensive outburst. Defensively, we have to be good. Hopefully we can bring that mindset and do what we need to do."
