LADY BEARS FALL AT #1 BELLEVUE
Margaretta slowed by turnovers in loss to Bellevue
BELLEVUE — Margaretta ran into a disciplined Bellevue defense Saturday and never recovered from a turnover-filled first half, falling 47-28 to the Division IV No. 1 Lady Red in a Sandusky Bay Conference crossover matchup.
The loss snapped an eight-game start for the Division VI top-ranked Polar Bears, who entered the contest unbeaten and facing one of the area’s toughest defensive units.
Bellevue took control early and built a 27-13 halftime lead, capitalizing on Margaretta mistakes and limiting second-chance opportunities. The Lady Red converted turnovers into transition points and committed just six turnovers of their own.
Margaretta briefly showed signs of momentum in the third quarter. A 3-pointer and two free throws from Ellyse Schaefer cut the deficit to 10, but Bellevue responded with baskets late in the period to restore separation.
Bellevue carried a 36-22 advantage into the fourth quarter, and Margaretta was unable to mount a sustained run. Kenadie Saylor scored midway through the final period to make it 38-26, but Bellevue closed the game on a decisive 9-2 run.
Cassidy Lane, a Gardner-Webb signee, was held to four points and 10 rebounds, while Bellevue senior Kaitlyn Turinsky controlled the paint with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks.
Saylor and Ashlyn Kingsborough led Margaretta with eight points apiece. The Polar Bears were limited offensively but continued to compete defensively against a taller Bellevue lineup.
Despite the setback, Margaretta remains unbeaten in Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division play and will look to regroup quickly with a road game at Vermilion on Tuesday before returning home to host Willard next Saturday.
Bellevue improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the SBC Lake Division. The Lady Red travel to Copley on Monday and host Norwalk on Friday.
