COACH NEILL WINS CAREER GAME 300 AS LADY BEARS ROLL
Coach Neill Wins Career Game 300 As Lady Bears Roll Over Norwalk
CASTALIA — Another chapter was added to Ray Neill’s coaching legacy Tuesday night.
Neill earned his 300th career victory as a head basketball coach as Division VI No. 2 Margaretta controlled the game from the opening minutes in a 48-28 win over Norwalk in Sandusky Bay Conference crossover play.
The milestone is the third Neill has reached in less than a year. He collected his 500th career baseball victory last April and surpassed 800 combined wins across sports in November. Now, the veteran coach sits at 300-100 on the basketball sideline — an achievement made even more meaningful at his alma mater.
Margaretta (11-1) wasted little time setting the tone. After Norwalk scored the game’s first point, the Polar Bears answered with a 10-0 run sparked by 3-pointers from Ashlyn Kingsborough and Lanie Schaefer, followed by four straight points from Cassidy Lane. Renna Keller later added a triple as Margaretta built a 16-4 lead after one quarter.
The Polar Bears’ defense dictated the pace early, forcing seven Norwalk turnovers in the opening quarter while limiting the Truckers to a single field goal.
Margaretta continued to pull away in the second quarter. Keller knocked down another 3-pointer and Kenadie Saylor converted at the line as the Polar Bears extended their run to 13-0. Norwalk struggled to generate offense, committing seven more turnovers in the period as Margaretta carried a 25-9 advantage into halftime.
Ellyse Schaefer opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and Margaretta maintained steady control on both ends of the floor. The Polar Bears were especially sharp with the ball, committing no turnovers in the middle two quarters. Keller later connected on her third 3 of the night in the fourth quarter as Margaretta closed out the win.
Defensively, the Polar Bears limited Norwalk to 10-of-41 shooting from the field, including just 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Truckers finished with 16 turnovers.
Saylor led Margaretta with 10 points, while Keller added nine points on three 3-pointers. Lanie Schaefer also scored nine, with Kingsborough chipping in six.
Margaretta will continue its season Saturday when it hosts Port Clinton.
