LADY BEARS IMPROVE TO 12-1
CASTALIA — Margaretta’s defense set the tone from the opening tip Saturday as the Lady Bears rolled to a 57-21 victory over Port Clinton in a Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division matchup.
Margaretta jumped out quickly, taking a 19-5 lead after the first quarter behind aggressive on-ball defense and transition scoring. The Lady Bears continued to control the game in the second quarter, outscoring Port Clinton 11-5 to carry a 30-10 advantage into halftime.
Margaretta matched its opening-period output, winning the frame 19-7 to push the lead to 49-17. The Lady Bears closed out the game with an 8-4 edge in the fourth quarter while continuing to limit Port Clinton’s offensive looks.
Cassidy Lane led Margaretta with 18 points, while Ellyse Schaefer added 12 points and Kenadie Saylor chipped in nine. Lilly Belak and Renna Keller scored five points apiece, Ashlyn Kingsborough and Addyson Fitzthum each had three, and Layni Schaefer finished with two.
Margaretta connected on three shots from beyond the arc, with Keller knocking down one three-pointer and Schaefer hitting two.
With the win, the Lady Bears improved to 12-1 overall and remained unbeaten in the SBC Bay Division at 6-0.
Margaretta will return to conference play Tuesday night when it travels to Huron to face the Tigers. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
