SCHAEFER'S BIG SHOT THE DIFFERENCE FOR LADY BEARS
Late Schaefer 3 lifts Margaretta past Newark at Classic in the Country
BERLIN, Ohio (AP) — Ellyse Schaefer knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer in the closing seconds as Margaretta held off Division I Newark for a 39–36 victory Sunday at the Classic in the Country at Hiland High School.
The win improved Margaretta to 14–1 on the season and moved the Lady Bears to No. 1 in Division VI in the latest MaxPreps State Poll. Facing a larger opponent, Margaretta relied on rebounding, defense, and timely shooting to secure the victory. The Lady Bears shut down Newark's two division I recruits and a 1,000 point Ashland commit in the victory
Cassidy Lane led the Lady Bears with 18 points and 10 rebounds, recording a double-double. Lane finished 7-of-17 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free-throw line while anchoring Margaretta on both ends of the floor. Schaefer added 12 points and accounted for all four of the Lady Bears’ three-point field goals, shooting 4-of-15 from beyond the arc.
Margaretta shot 14-of-42 from the field (33.3 percent), including 4-of-17 from three-point range, and went 7-of-10 at the free-throw line. The Lady Bears created extra possessions by dominating the glass, finishing with 41 total rebounds, including 16 offensive boards. Margaretta also posted 10 assists, five steals, and forced key stops late to close out the game.
The Lady Bears trailed early in the third quarter before responding with a run sparked by Lane and Schaefer. Margaretta kept the game within reach by controlling the paint, scoring 28 points inside, and limiting Newark’s second-chance opportunities. Neither team led by more than five points at any point.
Kenadie Saylor contributed four points and six rebounds, while Ashlyn Kingsborough added two points off the bench. Lillian Belak also scored two points.
Newark was led by Calli Geller (a Ashland commit) with 15 points and Emma Quackenbush (a Bowling Green Commit) with 14, but Margaretta held the Wildcats to seven points in each of the final two quarters. Newark had a chance to tie in the final seconds, the Lady Bears force a miss from Quackenbush and were able to secure the rebound.
Margaretta’s appearance marked its eighth consecutive season competing at the Classic in the Country, a showcase event featuring teams from multiple divisions across the state. The Lady Bears now turn their focus back to conference play, returning to action Saturday when they host Edison.
