LADY BEARS USE EARLY RUN TO BEAT GENOA
CASTALIA — Margaretta made sure there was no letdown.
With a pivotal Sandusky Bay Conference showdown looming later in the week, the Lady Bears remained sharp Tuesday night, earning a 47-34 victory over a strong Genoa team to continue their impressive run.
Ranked No. 1 in the state in Division VI, Margaretta improved to 18-1 overall and stayed perfect in Bay Division play. The win sets the stage for Thursday night’s trip to Willard, where the Lady Bears will play for an outright SBC Bay Division championship.
Margaretta wasted little time establishing control. The Lady Bears opened the game with a 10-0 run, forcing Genoa to burn a timeout just over a minute into the contest. Senior center Cassidy Lane scored seven points during the opening surge, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key, as Margaretta dictated the tempo early.
Lane was dominant throughout the night, consistently scoring on the block and finishing with a game-high 23 points on 11-of-12 shooting while pulling down eight rebounds. Genoa rarely sent double teams, and Margaretta took advantage by feeding Lane in favorable positions.
The Lady Bears carried their momentum into the second quarter, opening the period on a 7-0 run. A basket by Lane pushed the lead to 23-8 midway through the quarter, allowing Margaretta to control both ends of the floor. Strong ball movement and disciplined defense helped the Lady Bears take an 11-point lead into halftime.
Margaretta continued to build separation in the third quarter. Kenadie Saylor scored on a cut to the basket off an Ellyse Schaefer assist late in the period, stretching the lead to 35-19. Saylor finished with seven points and eight rebounds, while Lillian Belak added five points and provided key minutes on both ends.
Genoa attempted to make a push early in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit to nine points, but Margaretta responded immediately. Buckets from Saylor, Belak, and Ashlyn Kingsborough pushed the lead back to 15, effectively sealing the outcome.
Margaretta’s defense remained steady throughout, limiting Genoa to single digits in two quarters and preventing sustained scoring runs. Junior Makenna Moritz led the Comets with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Now riding a 10-game winning streak, Margaretta turns its attention to Thursday night’s road test at Willard. The Lady Bears edged the Crimson Flashes earlier this season and will look to complete the sweep and secure sole possession of the conference title.
