KENADIE SAYLOR'S THREE AT THE BUZZER GIVE LADY BEARS OUTRIGHT SBC TITLE

WILLARD — Championship moments often arrive when they are least expected, and on Thursday night the Margaretta Polar Bears delivered another unforgettable one. Kenadie Saylor knocked down a high-arcing three-pointer at the final horn to lift Division VI No. 1 Margaretta to a thrilling 39–36 victory over Willard Crimson Flashes, clinching the outright Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division championship. The dramatic finish capped a physical, tightly contested battle that saw momentum swing repeatedly over four quarters. With the score tied in the closing seconds and no timeouts remaining, Margaretta pushed the ball up the floor. Ellyse Schaefer penetrated the defense and kicked the ball to Saylor in the corner, where she calmly released the Polar Bears’ only three-pointer of the night. Despite a foul being whistled on the play, the shot found the bottom of the net as time expired, setting off a celebration on the Margaretta bench. The win secured Margaretta’s eighth consecutive SBC title and extended the program’s league winning streak to 54 games. Even more impressive, the Polar Bears’ senior class of Saylor, Cassidy Lane, Schaefer and Lillian Belak completed their careers a perfect 40–0 in conference play. Willard controlled the early stages, racing out to a 9–0 lead behind a pair of three-pointers from Camryn Wiers. Margaretta responded late in the first quarter with baskets from Lane and Addyson Fitzthum to close the gap to 9–8. The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter. Fitzthum continued to provide a spark off the bench, helping the Polar Bears grind their way back to even. Her bucket late in the half tied the game at 21 heading into the locker room. Willard regained the edge late in the third quarter when Daelynn Funk connected from beyond the arc, sending the Crimson Flashes into the fourth with a slim advantage. Early in the final period, Willard stretched the lead to five after Corrin Gettys converted at the free-throw line. Margaretta stayed composed, answering with scores from Lane and Fitzthum to keep the game within reach. Gettys and Reese Bedingfield briefly pushed the lead back to five, but Lane took control down the stretch. She came up with a steal and score, then tied the game at 34 with a three-point play after Bedingfield fouled out. In the final moments, Lane knocked down two free throws to give Margaretta a short-lived lead. Willard responded quickly, as Gettys made both of her free throws to tie the game once again, setting the stage for Saylor’s decisive shot. Lane led all scorers with 20 points, consistently finding ways to attack the basket and control the tempo late. Fitzthum finished with a season-high 12 points off the bench, providing timely offense when Margaretta needed it most. Saylor added five points, all highlighted by the game-winning three. Wiers paced Willard with 11 points, while Gettys added 10 off the bench. Margaretta improves to 19–1 overall and finishes SBC Bay Division play undefeated at 10–0. The Polar Bears return to the floor Monday for Senior Night against Eastwood before hosting Toledo Christian on Feb. 14, carrying championship momentum and a senior class that leaves conference play unblemished.
