#1 LADY BEARS WIN ON SENIOR NIGHT
Margaretta’s seniors made their final regular-season appearance at the Iceberg one to remember Monday night, powering the top-ranked Polar Bears to a 54–36 victory over Eastwood in a nonconference matchup.
The win moved Margaretta to 20-1 and capped an emotional Senior Night that also doubled as a celebration of the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division championship.
Senior center Cassidy Lane delivered a dominant all-around performance, scoring 19 points and collecting 15 rebounds. She controlled the game coming out of halftime, accounting for 12 points in the third quarter as Margaretta quickly re-established separation after Eastwood showed signs of life late in the first half.
Prior to tipoff, seniors Lane, Ellyse Schaefer, Kenadie Saylor and Lillian Belak were recognized with their families during a pregame ceremony marking the final regular-season home contest of their high school careers.
Once play began, Margaretta wasted little time asserting itself. Lane opened the scoring just seconds into the game, and the Polar Bears surged to a 16–1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Ellyse Schaefer connected on two three-point shots during the opening stretch, while Addyson Fitzhum came off the bench to score four points and help extend the early margin.
The Polar Bears pushed the lead to 24–3 midway through the second quarter, using defensive pressure to force turnovers and generate transition opportunities. Eastwood responded by closing the half on a 10–4 run as Margaretta endured a prolonged scoring drought, trimming the deficit to 28–13 at the break.
Any momentum Eastwood carried into halftime was quickly erased. Lane scored on multiple consecutive possessions to open the third quarter, repeatedly finishing in the paint and drawing contact. When Eastwood narrowed the gap to 13 points midway through the period, Margaretta answered with a decisive run to close the quarter, including a late basket that extended the lead to 48–25 entering the fourth.
Margaretta turned the ball over 20 times but compensated by forcing 24 Eastwood turnovers, maintaining control through defensive effort and rebounding.
With the outcome no longer in doubt, the Polar Bears played out the final minutes while the seniors watched from the bench, soaking in the atmosphere of their final regular-season home game.
Ellyse Schaefer finished with 13 points, while Saylor added nine. Fitzhum contributed six points, and Belak played a key role defensively as part of a balanced team effort.
Following the final buzzer, Margaretta remained on the court to take photos and cut down a net, marking another milestone in a season defined by consistency and senior leadership.
The Polar Bears will close the regular season Saturday against Toledo Christian at Margaretta Elementary School before opening postseason play at home Feb. 19 against Monroeville.
