LADY BEARS ARE DISTRICT CHAMPS

FREMONT, Ohio — Defense has been Margaretta’s identity all season. On Saturday afternoon, it delivered another trophy. The Lady Bears blanked Wynford in the second quarter and turned that defensive dominance into a 42-24 victory in the Division VI district final at Fremont High School. The win secured Margaretta’s fifth consecutive district championship and sent the Polar Bears back to the regional tournament. Top-ranked in the state by MaxPreps, Margaretta improved to 24-1 and extended its winning streak to 15 games. During the postseason run, the Bears have overwhelmed opponents by a combined 176-67 margin. They now advance to face Ottawa Hills in a regional semifinal at 8 p.m. Thursday at Bluffton University. Locking In Defensively Containing Wynford standout Caroline Sheldon was the primary focus. The junior guard connected on two early 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, but Margaretta forced her into a difficult night overall, limiting her to 4-of-16 shooting from the field. Seniors Lillian Belak and Kenadie Saylor led the defensive effort, rotating on Sheldon and fighting through screens. Communication and energy were key components. Margaretta held Wynford to just 18 percent shooting overall and forced a scoring drought that stretched nearly the entire second quarter. The Royals did not score in that period, allowing the Bears to seize control of the game. Belak’s hustle set the tone, repeatedly diving for loose balls and pressuring passing lanes. Coach Ray Neill praised her work ethic, noting that her defensive intensity sets the standard for the team. He also highlighted Saylor’s on-ball defense and pointed out that Cassidy Lane’s defensive instincts — particularly reading passing lanes — are often overlooked, even though she leads the team in steals this season. Adjusting to Wynford’s Game Plan Wynford (19-6) countered with a physical defensive approach of its own. The Royals face-guarded Ellyse Schaefer on the perimeter and sent double teams at Lane in the post, trying to limit Margaretta’s primary scoring threats. The strategy initially slowed the Bears’ offense, but it created open looks for others. Belak knocked down a 3-pointer midway through the first quarter to give Margaretta the lead for good at 8-5. Saylor, Belak and freshman Renna Keller all connected from beyond the arc in the first half, helping the Bears build a 17-8 halftime advantage. Ellyse Schaefer, who has frequently faced tight defensive attention this season, expressed confidence in her teammates’ ability to capitalize when defenses focus on her. Lane echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of unselfish play and trusting the team. Pulling Away After leading 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and 17-8 at halftime, Margaretta continued to apply pressure in the third. A Saylor 3-pointer pushed the lead to 21-11 midway through the quarter, though Sheldon answered to trim the deficit to seven late in the period. But the Bears responded quickly. Keller drilled a 3-pointer late in the third, and Ellyse Schaefer opened the fourth quarter with another from long range to extend the margin to 30-18. Lane added a strong finish inside through contact, and Saylor converted two free throws to stretch the lead further. The decisive moment came when Saylor broke Wynford’s press with a long pass to Schaefer in the right corner. Schaefer calmly buried the 3-pointer to make it 37-19, effectively sealing the outcome. Margaretta closed the game with a 15-point fourth quarter, its highest-scoring period of the afternoon. By the Numbers Margaretta (24-1) Kenadie Saylor 13, Cassidy Lane 10, Ellyse Schaefer 9, Renna Keller 6, Lillian Belak 4, Ellaynah Schaefer 0 — 42 Wynford (19-6) Caroline Sheldon 15, Maggie Ridge 6, Maradath Engler 3, Rylee Robinson 0, Jenna Filister 0 — 24 Quarter-by-quarter: Wynford — 8, 0, 10, 6 — 24 Margaretta — 11, 6, 10, 15 — 42 Three-point goals: Wynford 3 (Sheldon 2, Engler); Margaretta 7 (Ellyse Schaefer 2, Saylor 2, Keller 2, Belak). Playing for More Following the win, Neill dedicated the championship to longtime Margaretta supporter Gail Wiswell, who passed away on Christmas Eve at the age of 84, noting that the program felt his presence and support. With five straight district titles secured, Margaretta now turns its focus to the regional stage. If Saturday was any indication, the Lady Bears will carry with them what has defined their season — disciplined defense, balanced scoring and a team-first mentality.
