POLAR BEARS FALL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME IN REGIONAL FINAL
SUNBURY, Ohio (AP) — A remarkable postseason run for the Margaretta boys basketball team ended Sunday in heartbreaking fashion as the Polar Bears fell to Columbus Academy 62-59 in double overtime in the Division V regional final at Big Walnut High School.
Margaretta appeared to have one last chance late in the second overtime with the score tied 58-58. Senior guard Julian Washington came up with a steal near midcourt and drove toward the basket for a contested shot that missed. As teammate Judah Keller battled for the rebound, officials whistled Keller for a foul — his fifth of the game — sending Columbus Academy’s Jason Singleton to the free-throw line.
Singleton made both attempts to give the Vikings the lead, and Margaretta was unable to recover in the final seconds as Columbus Academy secured the regional championship.
Despite the loss, Margaretta delivered a determined performance against a taller, physical Columbus Academy squad and finished the season with an impressive 23-4 record.
Washington led the Polar Bears with 32 points in the final game of his high school career. The senior guard scored 11 of those points in the two overtime periods as Margaretta fought to extend its season.
Singleton matched Washington with 32 points for Columbus Academy, including several key baskets late in the game as the Vikings rallied from a second-half deficit.
Margaretta controlled much of the game after halftime. Following a slow start for both teams, the Polar Bears trailed just 18-17 at the break before erupting for 24 points in the third quarter.
Kale Bailey played a key role in the surge, scoring 10 of his 14 points during the period. The Polar Bears went on an 11-0 run to seize momentum and build a double-digit lead. A Bailey basket during that stretch pushed Margaretta ahead 33-20.
Washington later converted a three-point play to extend the advantage to 38-24 with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
However, Washington picked up his fourth foul late in the quarter and was forced to sit for several minutes as Columbus Academy began to climb back into the game.
Even so, Margaretta remained in control late in regulation. Bailey scored on a backdoor cut off an assist from Keller to give the Polar Bears a 43-32 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Columbus Academy gradually chipped away behind Singleton’s scoring before forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, Washington gave Margaretta a 51-49 lead with a jumper with 1:20 remaining. But Singleton raced the length of the court and finished at the buzzer to tie the game and send it into a second overtime.
Washington again helped Margaretta regain the lead early in the second overtime, driving to the basket for a left-handed layup that put the Polar Bears ahead 55-54 with 2:49 to play.
Columbus Academy answered down the stretch, setting up the decisive free throws after the late foul call.
Bailey added 14 points for Margaretta, while Keller finished with seven points and Keiygan Morris added four.
Columbus Academy also received a strong inside performance from 6-foot-8 sophomore Mitchell Zumberge, who recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Reinaldo Perez contributed six points while creating problems inside with his size.
The game was originally scheduled to be played Saturday at Ohio Dominican University but was postponed a day due to a power outage, forcing Margaretta to adjust travel plans before Sunday’s matchup.
Still, the Polar Bears battled through the adversity and pushed the Vikings to the brink.
Margaretta closed the season with a 23-4 record and another deep postseason run led by seniors Washington, Keller, Morris and their classmates, who helped carry the program back to the regional final.
