Margaretta picked up a key Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division win Thursday, defeating Huron 2-0 at Lions Park behind a complete-game shutout from junior left-hander Zach Gray. The Polar Bears (7-2, 4-0 SBC Bay) extended their winning streak to six games by combining efficient offense with strong pitching and defense. Gray went the distance, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking three. After issuing all three walks in the first four innings, he settled in and dominated late, retiring the final nine batters he faced without allowing a baserunner. Huron threatened at times, putting multiple runners in scoring position, but Gray worked out of trouble each time. The Tigers left four runners on second or third base and did not advance a runner past third after the third inning. Margaretta provided just enough offense, scoring one run in the first and adding another in the fourth. In the opening inning, Gray led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bren Smith. Hunter Grahl then delivered an RBI ground ball to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The Bears added an insurance run in the fourth. Memphis McKenzie was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second, and moved to third on Carter Kelley’s sacrifice bunt. Robbie LaCourse followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, pushing the lead to 2-0. Margaretta finished with three hits but capitalized on its opportunities, using two sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, and aggressive baserunning to generate runs. Defensively, the Bears committed one error but made key plays behind Gray to preserve the shutout. Margaretta returns to action with a road trip to Hopewell-Loudon on Friday, followed by Ottawa Hills on Saturday before resuming conference play Monday at Willard.
