SOFTBALL: LADY BEARS ARE SBC CHAMPS
After a difficult 2025 season that saw injuries derail much of the year, Margaretta Polar Bears are back on top of the SBC Bay Division.
Behind a complete-game performance from senior ace Cassidy Lane and timely hitting throughout the lineup, the Polar Bears defeated Huron Tigers 5-1 Friday night to secure at least a share of the conference championship.
Margaretta finished Bay Division play with a 9-1 conference record and improved to 17-5 overall heading into postseason play.
The Tigers struck first in the opening inning after a pair of singles and an RBI hit gave Huron an early 1-0 advantage. But the Polar Bears responded quickly and settled into the game behind Lane and a defense that came through in key moments all night long.
Lane battled through difficult conditions in the pitching circle, adjusting her approach as the game progressed. The senior right-hander finished with eight strikeouts and shut Huron down over the final four innings, allowing no hits during that stretch. Despite multiple Huron scoring threats, Margaretta’s defense consistently delivered big plays to protect the lead.
The Bears broke through offensively in the third inning. Breckyn Olsen started the rally with a leadoff single before Lucy Edwards delivered the biggest swing of the night. With two outs, Edwards launched a two-run home run over the center field scoreboard to give Margaretta a 2-1 lead.
Edwards had an outstanding night at the plate, collecting a home run, double, and single while consistently driving the ball hard throughout the game.
The middle of the lineup also played a major role offensively. Brooke Hastings reached base three times with a single, double, and intentional walk. Hastings also helped seal the victory defensively from behind the plate by throwing out a Huron runner attempting to steal third base in the final inning.
Margaretta added insurance runs in the seventh inning when Elie Grime reached on a walk and Tessa Lane got aboard after an error. Leadoff hitter Ellaynah Schaefer then lined a two-run single into left field to extend the lead. Schaefer later scored on a groundout by Elliana Young.
The conference title marks a major turnaround for the Polar Bears after last season’s injury-plagued 6-15 campaign. With key players healthy and confidence continuing to grow, Margaretta now turns its focus toward tournament play.
The Bears will face Lakota Tuesday in a Division VI district semifinal at Clyde High School.
