Polar Bears Advance to District Final Behind Lane’s Dominant Performance CLYDE, Ohio — Margaretta continued its strong postseason push Tuesday night, defeating Lakota 10-0 in five innings during a Division VI district semifinal at Joe Wilson Field. The top-seeded Polar Bears improved to 18-5 and advanced to Thursday’s district championship game against Wynford. Senior standout Cassidy Lane led the way for Margaretta both in the circle and at the plate. The Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division Most Outstanding Performer threw a one-hit shutout, allowing no runs while striking out 11 and walking one in five innings. Lane also contributed offensively with both a double and a triple as Margaretta’s lineup consistently pressured Lakota throughout the night. Margaretta grabbed an early lead before putting together its biggest inning in the second. Ellianna Young drove in Tessa Lane with a groundout, and Lucy Edwards reached on a Lakota error that allowed Ellaynah Schaefer to score and extend the lead to 4-0. Lane followed with an RBI double to center field that brought home Edwards. Brooke Hastings later added another RBI hit to score Lane and increase the advantage to 6-0. The Polar Bears continued to add runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings while their defense remained flawless behind Lane. Margaretta finished the game without committing an error, while Lakota committed six defensively. Lakota managed just one hit against Lane and struggled to generate offense throughout the game as Margaretta controlled the pace from start to finish. Sophia Bomer took the loss for Lakota after pitching 2 1/3 innings and allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits in relief. Wynford advanced to the district final with a 13-2 victory over South Central. Lily Laipply recorded three hits for Wynford, while Erin Wolfe homered and drove in four runs. Margaretta will now attempt to continue its postseason run Thursday evening with a district championship on the line in Clyde.
