BEARS WIN SECTIONAL TITLE: DISTRICT SEMI FINAL THURSDAY
CASTALIA — Tournament baseball often comes down to timely execution, clean defense and reliable pitching. Margaretta checked every box Tuesday night.
After waiting three extra days to begin postseason play because of weather delays, the Polar Bears finally opened their Division V tournament run with a 3-0 victory over Port Clinton at Lions Park.
Margaretta improved to 20-5 on the season, tying the school record for wins previously set by the 2022 squad. The Polar Bears also earned their second shutout victory over Port Clinton this spring and advanced to Thursday’s district semifinal against Oak Harbor.
The Bears leaned heavily on their pair of left-handed pitchers. Mason Kromer started and delivered five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out multiple hitters and never issuing a walk. Zach Gray closed the final two innings, striking out four batters and preserving the shutout.
Together, the duo limited Port Clinton to four total hits and kept the Redskins from mounting any serious offensive threat throughout the game.
Kromer also contributed offensively, finishing with two hits and driving in an insurance run in the fifth inning. Hunter Grahl added two hits of his own, including a leadoff double that helped create Margaretta’s final run. Grahl reached base three times in the victory.
Although the Polar Bears collected eight hits, breaking through offensively was not easy early on. Margaretta stranded multiple runners in each of the first three innings as Port Clinton starter Derek Abernathy consistently worked out of trouble.
The Bears finally capitalized in the fourth inning without recording a hit.
Memphis McKenzie reached after drawing a walk, and Margaretta used small ball to apply pressure. Two sacrifice bunts moved runners into scoring position before Robbie LaCourse reached safely on a Port Clinton error, allowing McKenzie to score the game’s first run. Later in the inning, Carter Kelley crossed home plate on Gray’s sacrifice fly to center field, extending the lead to 2-0.
Margaretta added another run in the fifth inning when Grahl doubled to open the frame. Pinch-runner Gavin Berg later scored on Kromer’s sharp single through the middle, giving the Polar Bears a three-run cushion.
The Bears’ defense made sure the advantage held up.
Margaretta committed no errors and consistently converted routine plays behind its pitching staff. Port Clinton repeatedly put the ball in play, but the Polar Bears remained steady defensively throughout the night.
Tuesday’s game originally was scheduled for Saturday before heavy rain forced multiple postponements and even a brief venue change attempt to Oak Harbor. Additional conflicts pushed the game to Tuesday, but the delay allowed Margaretta to preserve Gray for postseason action while still giving him valuable innings before Thursday’s district semifinal.
The Polar Bears now turn their attention toward Oak Harbor, a team that edged Margaretta 5-4 earlier this season. With 20 wins already secured and momentum building behind strong pitching and defense, the Bears will look to continue one of the best seasons in program history.
