LADY BEARS FALL IN REGIONAL FINAL
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — Margaretta's remarkable postseason journey ended Friday night, but not before the Polar Bears demonstrated the resilience and determination that defined one of the program's most memorable seasons.
Making their first regional championship appearance since 1987, the Polar Bears battled until the final out before falling 9-2 to Lincolnview in a Division VI regional final at Bowling Green State University's Meserve Field.
Margaretta finished the season 20-6, captured a share of the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division title, won a district championship and advanced farther in the state tournament than any Polar Bears softball team in nearly 40 years.
The Bears found themselves in an early deficit after Lincolnview scored twice in the opening inning. A pair of two-out runs put Margaretta behind 2-0 despite senior pitcher Cassidy Lane limiting additional damage.
Lane settled in after the opening frame and kept the Polar Bears within striking distance for much of the afternoon. The senior worked through traffic on the bases while battling one of the state's most productive lineups.
Margaretta's first major scoring opportunity came in the second inning. Lane reached with a single and advanced into scoring position following a defensive mistake. Brooke Hastings followed with a sharp single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Lincolnview pitcher Ila Hughes escaped the threat with back-to-back strikeouts and a comebacker to preserve the shutout.
That sequence proved significant as the Lancers gradually added to their lead, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth before adding three runs over the final two innings.
Despite the growing deficit, the Polar Bears continued to compete and delivered their best offensive inning in the seventh.
Lucy Edwards ignited the rally by driving a triple into right field, ending a stretch in which Hughes had retired 15 consecutive batters. Cassidy Lane followed with a run-scoring double to right field, bringing Edwards home for Margaretta's first run of the game.
Brooke Hastings then lined a single up the middle, and Lane later scored on a defensive miscue after a ball put in play by Isla Palomo. The two-run rally prevented the shutout and reflected the persistence that carried the Bears throughout the season.
Margaretta collected five hits in the contest.
Lane paced the offense, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and a run scored. Hastings also recorded two hits, going 2-for-3. Edwards contributed a triple and scored a run, while Palomo drove in a run.
The Polar Bears were ultimately hurt by five defensive errors, allowing Lincolnview to extend innings and create additional scoring chances. The Lancers capitalized on those opportunities, finishing with nine runs on 11 hits.
Hughes earned the victory for Lincolnview, striking out 16 batters while allowing five hits and two runs. She carried a shutout into the seventh inning before Margaretta's late rally.
While the regional final marked the end of the high school careers of seniors Cassidy Lane and Ellianna Young, the future remains bright for the Polar Bears. Much of the roster returns from a team that reached a regional championship game, won 20 contests and reestablished Margaretta among Northwest Ohio's top softball programs.
For a team that had not appeared in a regional final since 1987, the 2026 season delivered a breakthrough. The Polar Bears combined veteran leadership with emerging young talent, turning a conference championship season into a memorable tournament run that included sectional, district and regional victories before finally being stopped one game short of the state semifinals.
