BEARS DROP TOUGH ONE TO COLDWATER IN DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
BLUFFTON, Ohio (AP) — Margaretta's record-setting season came to an end Saturday, but not before the Polar Bears showed the fight, resilience and teamwork that made them one of the most successful teams in school history.
Facing one of Ohio's top-ranked programs in the Division V district championship game, Margaretta built an early four-run lead and remained tied entering the late innings before falling 7-5 to Coldwater at Memorial Field.
The Polar Bears closed the season with a 21-7 record, sharing the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division championship and establishing a new school record for victories in a single season.
Margaretta seized momentum immediately in the second inning.
After Memphis McKenzie reached base, Robbie LaCourse delivered an RBI single to score the game's first run. The Polar Bears continued to pressure Coldwater on the bases, and Hunter Heck scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Later in the inning, Zach Gray lined a run-scoring single that brought home Gavin Berg. With the bases loaded and one out, Hunter Grahl worked a walk to force in another run as Margaretta completed a four-run frame built on patience, timely hitting and aggressive baserunning.
The inning showcased the style of baseball that helped the Polar Bears reach the district championship game. Margaretta capitalized on opportunities, put pressure on the defense and executed in key situations.
The Bears carried the 4-0 advantage into the third inning before Coldwater began to chip away at the deficit.
Despite the Cavaliers eventually taking the lead, Margaretta refused to back down.
Trailing 5-4 in the fifth inning, Grahl reached base and later scored when Mason Kromer drilled an RBI double. The extra-base hit tied the contest at 5-5 and gave the Polar Bears new life entering the final two innings.
Kromer's double was Margaretta's only extra-base hit of the afternoon and one of several clutch offensive moments for the Bears.
Margaretta finished with nine hits, collecting three more than Coldwater. LaCourse, Gray and Kromer each drove in runs, while Grahl scored and added an RBI. Berg, Heck and McKenzie all scored during the Bears' four-run outburst in the second inning.
On the mound, Kromer battled through a challenging lineup and kept Margaretta within striking distance throughout the afternoon. Jaxon Shearn provided relief in the sixth inning before McKenzie entered and recorded the final two outs.
The difference ultimately came in the late innings as Coldwater scored the go-ahead run in the sixth and added an insurance run before closing out the victory.
Even in defeat, the accomplishments of the Polar Bears' season were significant.
Margaretta captured a share of the SBC Bay Division title, advanced through tournament play to reach a district final and established a new standard for success with 21 victories. The team consistently relied on strong chemistry, veteran leadership and contributions throughout the lineup to produce one of the best seasons the program has ever seen.
Saturday's game also marked the final contest for seniors Hunter Grahl, Bren Smith, Emmett Leibengood, Teddy Woolaver and Mason Yetter. That group helped lead the Polar Bears through a historic campaign and played a major role in the program's rise this spring.
While the loss ended Margaretta's postseason run one step short of a regional appearance, the season will be remembered for its achievements. The Polar Bears not only brought home a conference championship share but also established a school record for wins and advanced deeper into tournament play than any Margaretta baseball team in recent memory.
By season's end, the Polar Bears had proven themselves among the top teams in Northwest Ohio and laid a foundation for continued success in the years ahead.
