CASTALIA — Woodmore running back Lucas Caldwell saw plenty of daylight Friday at the Duck Pond.
Caldwell, a speedy sophomore, carried 19 times for 204 yards and five touchdowns to lead Woodmore to a 39-13 win over Margaretta in a battle of Sandusky Bay Conference contenders.
Caldwell also added an interception on defense as the Wildcats shut down the Polar Bears on homecoming.
"He is a really explosive player and he has a bright future," Margaretta coach Lucas Poggiali said. "They took it to us. We were outplayed in all three phases tonight."
Margaretta, which managed only two first downs in the second half, fell to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the SBC.
The Polar Bears have work to do to clinch a Division V playoff spot.
"As much as this one hurts, there's still a lot to play for," Poggiali said. "We have to stick together and make sure we finish on the right note to get to the second season."
The Bears finish the regular season at Gibsonburg next week before hosting Ottawa Hills in Week 10.
Woodmore improved to 8-0, 3-0.
The Wildcats finish at home against Lakota and Gibsonburg, which improved to 3-0 in the conference with a 53-50 win over Northwood.
Woodmore scored two easy touchdowns in the first eight minutes before the Polar Bears made a stand.
The Wildcats scored on the third play from scrimmage when Caldwell got to the corner and turned it upfield for a 21-yard touchdown run with 10:39 on the first quarter clock.
The score was set up by a 51-yard pass from Calvin Lipstraw to Collins Perkins.
Margaretta punted on its first possession and the Wildcats went 70 yards nine plays, scoring on Caldwell's 35-yard run.
Caldwell rushed six times for 84 yards in the first quarter.
Margaretta got on the board in the second quarter.
After back-to-back 15-yard penalties on Woodmore gave the Bears a first down on the Wildcat 20, Carter Luzader sprinted 20 yards for a touchdown.
The extra point was no good, but the Polar Bears were within 14-6.
Late in the first half, Margaretta forced a turnover on downs and took over on its own 38 with 37 seconds on the clock.
A couple pass completions and a 14-yard scramble by quarterback Robbie LaCourse got the ball to the Woodmore 31, but LaCourse was intercepted inside the 5 on a last-second desperation heave.
Woodmore, which got some payback for Margaretta's 35-0 win last year, dominated the second half.
Caldwell's third touchdown — a four-yard run — was set up by Gavin Donley's 28-yard punt return.
Margaretta punted again and Caldwell gave Woodmore a commanding 27-6 by sprinting 76 yards for a touchdown.
LaCourse limped off the field as a trainer held his right shoulder early in the fourth quarter.
Margaretta played without physical running back Tyson Bailey, who missed his second straight game with an ankle injury.
The Polar Bears failed on a fourth-down attempt deep in their own territory midway through the fourth quarter and Caldwell scored on a three-yard run three plays later.
Margaretta's only second half highlight came on the ensuing kickoff when homecoming king Kale Bailey returned the kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.
Lucy Hartman was named homecoming queen.
Woodmore's Ish Nagy completed the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-4.
The Wildcats, who play in Division VI, are in position to win their first conference title in nearly 30 years.
